New licensing models and advancements in cloud-based GIS technology have opened new possibilities for utilizing ArcGIS Online as an enterprise GIS platform, especially for smaller organizations with limited GIS/IT staff. Benefits include reduced technical overhead, lower staff burden for administration of software and hardware, automatic updates, and earlier access to platform enhancements and upgrades. However, there are technical and administrative limitations to this approach, and organizations should carefully consider these in context of their current workflows, user needs, and plans for future growth of their GIS. We will discuss our experience moving from a standalone ArcGIS Server environment to ArcGIS Online. This migration included a transition from 3.x-based maps to 4.x (and Web AppBuilder to Experience Builder apps), as well as workflow changes, application configuration and map design, scripting processes, use of Arcade, and more.
