A Northwest Utility’s Path to Grid Resilience: Using Vegetation Intelligence Powered by Remote Sensing to Optimize Operations and Wildfire Liability Management
Like utilities throughout the Pacific Northwest, Northern Lights, Inc. faces unprecedented fuel loads and ignition risk driven by record-breaking temperatures, droughts, and infestations. As trees died off and wildfire risk compounded across NLI’s rugged, rural territory, the Cooperative turned to vegetation intelligence driven by remote sensing technologies to optimize operations, improve grid resilience, and protect the community. In this session, you will discover how vegetation intelligence is revolutionizing vegetation management and how it can enable a utility to prioritize work quickly and affordably in the places that matter most.

ArcGIS Experience Builder Development Considerations
ArcGIS Experience Builder is described by Esri as "a highly configurable solution for building compelling web apps without writing code." Coding, however, provides significant additional benefits, either through the creation and installation of custom widgets or through more traditional application customization, which involves, for example, adding code that runs in response to browser events. In this session, an overview of these options and associated development considerations will be provided in a manner that is designed to be helpful to both developers and non-developers alike, with explanations supported by comparisons with ArcGIS Web AppBuilder development technology. In view of the scheduled retirement of ArcGIS Web AppBuilder in July 2024, the transition to Experience Builder will also be addressed and, as always, attendees will be encouraged to engage with their fellow GIS professionals to discuss the topic at hand.

Providing Intelligence in Disaster Response using GIS for the Nez Perce Tribe
GIS provides intelligence to support decision making during a disaster. GIS can be used to locate and evaluate various hazards such as floods and fires that affect the people of the Nez Perce Tribe along with the Nez Perce Tribe’s infrastructure and land resources. GIS components provide intelligence during disaster response to quickly provide the necessary resources to alleviate disaster damages. This presentation will focus on three GIS components which provide situational awareness for the Nez Perce Tribe’s emergency management team which include web mapping applications, field surveying, and dashboard operations.

Finding Your Way: Approaching GIS from Different Directions
As GIS professionals, we share a great deal of common knowledge, while often having quite different backgrounds and experiences, which shape our ways of thinking and functioning, both consciously and subconsciously, in profound ways. Is it because of nature or nurture? Are we introverts or extroverts? Do we tend to be guided by local influences or international ones? In this collaboration session, four GIS professionals based in Idaho and Washington will offer their perspectives on why they do things the way they do as they find their way in the world of GIS and as they evolve in their professional careers. They'll consider their traits, both positive and negative, and impart their wisdom with a view to inspiring a healthy discussion with and amongst their audience that may lead to positive outcomes for all involved.

Using GIS to Create Disaster Response Survey Maps
Having our own fleet of aircraft offers a unique opportunity, allowing our pilots and disaster response team members to quickly survey an area affected by natural disasters by flying an airplane over the affected area, taking hundreds of images of the damage. This information is vital for preparing the response, as our aircraft respond faster and with more detail than most satellites. In addition, our photographs are used to provide geospatial intelligence, which can inform how many people were affected and what supplies are needed in the response.

Transitioning from ArcGIS Enterprise to ArcGIS Online: a Teton County (ID) Case Study
New licensing models and advancements in cloud-based GIS technology have opened new possibilities for utilizing ArcGIS Online as an enterprise GIS platform, especially for smaller organizations with limited GIS/IT staff. Benefits include reduced technical overhead, lower staff burden for administration of software and hardware, automatic updates, and earlier access to platform enhancements and upgrades. However, there are technical and administrative limitations to this approach, and organizations should carefully consider these in context of their current workflows, user needs, and plans for future growth of their GIS. We will discuss our experience moving from a standalone ArcGIS Server environment to ArcGIS Online. This migration included a transition from 3.x-based maps to 4.x (and Web AppBuilder to Experience Builder apps), as well as workflow changes, application configuration and map design, scripting processes, use of Arcade, and more.

NG9-1-1 and the GIS efforts in Idaho to make it happen
For the past 19 months the state has been working with Public Safety Addressing Points (PSAPs) all over Idaho to try and get the 5 datasets required for Next Generation 911 ready for implementation. Learn about NG9-1-1, why GIS plays such a crucial role in this 911 call-routing system, and the efforts of the State to advance those state-wide GIS data layers. GIS datasets require very specific standards that need to be met for interacting with NG9-1-1 equipment, and to ensure correct call routing. Learn more about the development and adoption of those standards.

Converting Historical Aerial Imagery into Intelligent Geospatial Data
Geographically unaware historical aerial images are an underutilized resource because they are challenging to find, access, and explore using modern mapping applications. Yet, there are millions of these images spread across agencies and libraries. These images cannot currently be used easily in GIS applications, because they lack the geospatial information required to do so. This severely limits their use. Broad access will only be achieved if we can overcome barriers that currently limit their use to those with specific map knowledge and specialized software tools. The presentation will discuss the approaches the University of Idaho Library is undertaking to unlock access to this treasure trove of historical information.

A Brief History of Topographic Maps
The first USGS topographic maps in 1884 started as hand-engraved copper plates, and in the early 1900s, relief was hand-shaded. By the 1960s, maps were scribed on mylar sheets, labels were applied letter by letter, and technicians field-verified map features. Since 2009, maps are made using GIS software with remotely sensed data, produced on a predefined grid and updated every three years. The 2022 release of topoBuilder allows users to create custom topographic maps with the latest available data from The National Map centered anywhere in the U.S. and Territories.
