Converting Historical Aerial Imagery into Intelligent Geospatial Data

Geographically unaware historical aerial images are an underutilized resource because they are challenging to find, access, and explore using modern mapping applications. Yet, there are millions of these images spread across agencies and libraries. These images cannot currently be used easily in GIS applications, because they lack the geospatial information required to do so. This severely limits their use. Broad access will only be achieved if we can overcome barriers that currently limit their use to those with specific map knowledge and specialized software tools. The presentation will discuss the approaches the University of Idaho Library is undertaking to unlock access to this treasure trove of historical information.
